Together for the Gospel 2018

Esteban recently had the enormous privilege of attending the Together For the Gospel (T4G) conference in Louisville, KY. A conference designed to serve pastors through many sessions and panels, as well as providing mountains of free books that help build their library in order to aid their teaching and preaching as well as inform their own hearts and minds. Esteban was invited by pastor Bill Abernathy of Berean Baptist Church in Portage, Michigan, and traveled with fellow missionary friend Jon McGinnis.

Esteban was really excited to get to hear live and in person the great theologians that he has so loved learning from through books. He got to greet a couple of his favorites up close and personally!!

After the conference he and Jon drove up to Michigan to spend the weekend with the brothers and sisters in Christ at Berean. Esteban was able to share with both the youth group and in the Sunday evening service about Seeds of Life, the ministry here in Costa Rica, and what God has been doing.

What a blessing to enjoy a week of fellowship with other brothers in Christ who are serving the same Lord and Savior, working towards the same goal of advancing the Kingdom of God, and fighting to defend the Gospel in a fallen world. Esteban came home encouraged and excited to put into practice what he learned and saw on this trip.

The kids and I missed him while he was gone, but are very thankful for these opportunities for learning and growth, as well as being able to share in ministry elsewhere too!

Joining the SCORE Team

It has been a great start to the year!! We kicked off the year with a ministry filled January, family visits all through February, and March has shown the blessing and importance of the whole body of Christ working together!! [Here are the links to each monthly update so far: January 2018 Update, February 2018 Update, March 2018 Update]

As we enter April, we are thrilled to announce that our family has been accepted by SCORE International as official missionaries, and we are now entering our apprentice year with the organization!

A little bit of the backstory:
When we arrived here to Santa Rosa as newlyweds and began church hunting, we discovered quickly that all the evangelical churches in this area embrace false doctrine and are unwilling to change. Seeing the need for a firm foundation in the Word of God alone, Esteban began leading a small in-house Bible study and, by the grace of God alone, it has grown into a small ministry including: regular Sunday morning services, weekly Bible studies for women, special discipleship studies by topic, and a kids club and youth group on Saturdays. Never having dreamed that we would end up as a pastor family, we merely followed in obedience the conviction that the Holy Spirit placed on our hearts to disciple others in Truth (2 Tim. 4:1-5).
From the beginning we have been able to count on Andy Gordley, Field Director for SCORE in Costa Rica and my GAP director almost 8 years ago now, as a mentor and guide to help us keep moving forward biblically. He facilitated a partnership with SCORE specifically through the GAP program by sending us students first a couple times a year, then monthly, and as of 2016 weekly, to work with us in ministry. We have also been able to receive several summer teams through SCORE that come for a week or so of ministry and construction work here on the property. This past fall, Andy suggested we look into applying to become missionaries with SCORE officially.

Why SCORE?
Choosing SCORE as our backing mission organization was kind of a no-brainer. As you may have noticed, the main component in the lead up to this decision was Andy himself. There's no other mission's organization that has been with us from the beginning or that we know from years back like SCORE. I myself did a short term trip with SCORE as a sophomore in high school, their GAP program in Costa Rica as a recent graduate, and since Esteban and I have been married living in Costa Rica we have kept in contact with the Gordley family. We are also passionate about SCORE's mission: "To glorify God through missions in obedience to the great comission," and core values: evangelize the lost, engage people in missions, equip others, and express the Gospel (Matt. 28:19-20, 1 Peter 4:7-11). We thank God for the opportunity to be a part of such an organization.

Why NOW?
If the ministry started over 4 years ago, why look into joining a missions organization now? Good question! As I briefly touched on before, we aren't necessarily missionaries in the traditional sense, but rather a family serving where we live. However, since we serve a God who is "able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think" (Eph. 3:20), the Bible study we started has gained momentum and grown into a ministry with potential much beyond our own abilities and imagination. A good example of this is just looking at the "coincidental" location (God's sovereign plan) of our property alone where there is soon to be a new government funded urbanization with 76 new families moving in right next door! We believe in investing time, love and the power of the Gospel into the lives of the people of our community, and have visions and dreams to transform this area into a center of spiritual growth and evangelism for our Lord Jesus. For this reason we decided that it would only be of benefit to have an organization like SCORE officially behind us. Not only does this provide a financial pathway for donations to reach needs, but also it provides spiritual, directional, and personal accountability. We don't have to feel alone or make decisions without a multitude of counsel in which there is safety (Prov. 11:14, 15:22, 24:6).

I hope this gives a little insight into how we've gotten to where we are. It is a true joy to be counted as part of the SCORE team. And while our situation looks a little different than a typical sent out, supported missionary, being part of a group of couples and families also giving their time and energy to serving the Lord through missions is more than encouraging! Pray for us on our journey as we develop this ministry for the glory of God and the discipling of the nations!!

The Students Speak: What's it like to spend the night in a Tico home?

Every time we have students here for ministry, whether it be over the course of the 9 month GAP program or just for a week of short term missions, we like to divide them up and send them out to spend the night in homes of different families from our congregation. It's a great experience in having to step [sometimes struggle] across the language barrier and experiencing another culture (for both parties involved!), all the while enjoying in Christian fellowship and celebrating the beauty of diversity in the Family of Christ. This is what our students this year have to say about these experiences:

BETHANY WALLEY
“Staying in Tico houses are a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone. When you don’t have any other English speaker with you, you are forced to depend on the Spanish you know and use charades for the rest. This humbles you a lot but you also end up learning new words and Tico phrases! From my experience, staying in Tico houses are kind of like being “adopted” for a weekend. My host families have always been so welcoming, sharing with me about their lives, and making me feel like a part of the family. More than anything, host homes are also a great ministry opportunity to tell them about what God is teaching you and by learning more about their needs, you are able to better pray for them.”

HUNTER KALER
"Something God has personally been revealing in my life through this GAP year is the importance of intentional relationships. Spending time in a Tico home has been one of the coolest and most eye-opening experiences of this year. --- You can learn a lot about someone by spending the night with them and in my case I got a lot of one on one time with Andrea. Both times I spent the night with her it was just the two of us in the house and so we really got to know each other, our families, stories, and struggles. I’ve also loved just learning about the Costa Rican culture through my time. For example, Andrea taught me how to make my favorite Costa Rican drink: limonada con hierbabuena. She knows how much I love it and asked right away if I wanted some the second time I spent the night at her house. In building that relationship, I noticed that I am becoming more intentional with her on Sundays, not to mention, I now know how to pray for her. Overall, it is super neat to see and experience how God is at work in the life of those in the church and to get their opinions and thoughts on the things of the church.”

STEVEN PEDERSEN
“For me host homes have jump started my relationships in the church. Since I came to Costa Rica not knowing any Spanish, I had no formal introduction to some of these families. But when I go and stay at their homes it helps all of us get names right. Since being in several homes for a night it has been fun to experience the hospitality side of Tico culture. These people love getting to know other people and starting relationships. So it’s been cool now to feel like a church member and not the quiet gringo that can’t talk to anyone.”

Easter 2018

He is Risen!! What a wonderful time we had this past Resurrection Sunday with the congregation at Seeds of Life. We all gathered together and enjoyed a special service with worship songs and Scripture readings directing our minds and hearts to meditate on the awful yet awesome work of our Lord Jesus on the cross of Calvary, and its completion and victory over sin and the grave in the resurrection.
The message was particularly special as we reflected on 10 benefits of the resurrection of Christ, with the participation and comments of several of our men. It was more relaxed and had a family feel to it rather than the typical Sunday morning sermon. Then of course Easter is not complete without a fellowship luncheon!! Praise the Lord for sending his Son; praise him for rising again so our faith is not in vain and we can have forgiveness of sins!!
